Pulsatile, or radial, durability testing of endovascular implants requires running 400 million cycles to meet standard compliance. Depending on how fast the system runs, testing could take anywhere from four months to a year. ASTM F2477-23 states that test samples must maintain diametric strain targets during that period determined by routine measurement. Any cycles outside of predetermined tolerances are considered invalid and must be repeated.
While this level of scrutiny is warranted, the testing conditions place high demands on the engineering team. BDC Laboratories’ RDT-7600i and its companion software are designed to reduce the number of hours that engineers spend monitoring and adjusting radial fatigue and durability test setups.
Inside the RDT-7600i, an optical micrometer automatically measures the dynamic diametric strain of each station at predetermined locations and intervals throughout the test period. With a poseable micrometer, the machine can take measurements at a wide variety of angles, which improves the accuracy of results.
By design, RDT-7600i eliminates the need for an operator to interface with the system, rotate manifolds, and take measurements. If a sample strays from set targets, the system software adjusts the station to return to the in-tolerance conditions before moving on to measure the next sample.
While existing radial durability testers rely on one driver for multiple stations, the RDT-7600i features six independent test station controls. With independent stations, engineers can test samples with different lengths, diameters, and diametric strain requirements concurrently without compromise. Each station features a separate fluid reservoir for finer temperature and pressure control and greater measurement accuracy. This configuration is advantageous for both early- and late-stage prototypes.
